RIP John Inman, 1935 – 2007 …. He’s Free!

johninmanI was just blogging about sham grief over the death of celebrities, and now this morning I wake to find that a comedic actor whose performances I enjoyed is gone from the earth.

John Inman, aka Mr. Humphries of Are You Being Served?, has died at age 71 of hepatitis (possibly caused by eating contaminated food in 2004?). More here.

May he be free. Condolences to his partner and his other family and friends.

Although the sitcom itself, which aired from 1972-1985, got old fast, IMO, Inman’s performance as Mr. Humphries continued to feel fresh, fun, charming. And, with a tip of the hat to Jean Baudrillard, it’s not like we in fandom are losing Inman — he will continue to appear and reappear in virtual reality on DVD and BBC thanks to the marvels of technology. (If he’s anything like Orville Redenbacher, he will even give us new performances … They might not feel as fresh as the ‘real’ thing, though.)

  1. Hi,

I run an official “Are You Being Served?” site at:

There are a lot of images and info pertaining to all the cast members including John Inman.

There is also a lot of other stuff for the AYBS fan including a blog, forum and an online role playing game.
