Field Trip: Rowell’s Bridge (NH)

While visiting kennels, we stumbled onto Hopkinton Dam and Rowell’s Bridge, a covered bridge over the Contoocook River on Route 127 in Hopkinton. It’s also called #9. It was built in 1853 for $300.25, rebuilt by the state in 1965 for $9,521, and rehabilitated by the state in 1982 for $9,000. According to online notes, “a short time after it was constructed, a herd of cattle, driven faster than they should have been, moved the bridge off its abutments.”
