Crying Today – 5: This is Your Life, Space Shuttle Discovery!

NRP did a wonderful story yesterday, on the occasion of Discovery’s last launch, and the transcript does NOT do it any justice whatsoever; please listen to the audio for a moving tribute to Discovery.

Confession: I don’t care a whit about the space program. Yet, at the end of this story, I teared up, it was that effective a human interest piece – about a non-human. Call me maudlin.

“Up and up you roared, soaring to the silence of space. … Both times NASA had its heart broken by a disaster — Challenger and Columbia — you were the first shuttle to return to flight.”

Everything that the space shuttle was intended to do, Discovery, and only Discovery, has done.”

So bittersweet.
