Kind of fun. The Planthunter, a new favourite online plant-art-nature magazine, interviews folks using 20 or so Cheeky Questions. Sort of like the Proust Questionnaire but more plant-oriented. Or as their tagline says, “Life. With Plants.” Some of the questions seem simple on the surface but when I tried to answer them, it took a bit of thought. (Links to some of the The Planthunter pieces below.)
If you were a plant, what would you be? I can be kind of prickly, and I like the idea of having a multitude of flowers, colourful fruits that birds like, and a resting period in my life, so perhaps a deciduous tree like the hawthorn.
What cheers you up?
Being outside, walking or hiking on the beach, in the woods, in a meadow, near a marsh or bog.
What is the habit you are proudest of breaking or want to break?
Stopped drinking diet soda 3 years ago.
What is your favourite word?
Have you ever been in love with two people at the same time?
Name a skill you wish you had.
Wish I had a really great singing voice.
What is the most played song on your playlist?
I don’t listen to much music, but lately I am liking “Girls Chase Boys” by Ingrid Michaeson, “Just Give Me A Reason” by Pink with Nate Ruess, and “Wagon Wheel” by Darius Rucker.
If you had to make a garden with 3 plants, what would they be?
That’s a difficult one. I’m into beautiful food forests right now, so, in my hypothetical fantasy garden I’d have lime trees, globe artichokes, and rainbow or bright lights chard. And garlic.
What makes somebody sexy?
The look in their eyes. Chemistry.
What do you miss most about being a kid?
Taking good health, of myself and others, for granted.
What’s the first thing you notice when you meet a person?
Eyes, quick wittedness, timbre of voice.
What is your favourite natural scent?
Citrus, especially grapefruit, and jasmine, Confederate or cape.
What qualities in people do you admire the most?
Directness with compassion. Light-heartedness, lack of grudge-holding, absence of resentment. Appreciative curiosity.
What would you be doing in an alternate life or career?
I really like this life and have trouble imagining something better.
What’s your perfect three-course meal?
Something with olives, artichokes, grilled fish. With friends.
Do you have a favourite garden?
Mine, and Longwood Gardens.
What is special about where you live?
The many and varied hiking trails in a 5-mile radius. My permaculture friends, and our book & food gatherings.
If you could control your dreams, what would you dream about?
Beach vacation with friends.
What’s your favourite kind of weather?
Endless summer, magical snow, brisk winds, dreamy sunlight, thunderstorms.
How many people are you completely yourself with?
None, really, except myself. I’m more reserved than most people think. But then again, I’m not someone else with anyone, either.
